Ohio Has New Solar Training Facility

Solar training in Ohio received a boost on the news that the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center are hoping to provide a new opportunity for local students to train for jobs they hope will be in high demand in the future such as in the solar energy sector.

While students returning to Ohio Hi-Point’s south campus in Urbana might not realize it, the electrical systems at the south campus were recently upgraded, said Robert Walker, supervisor of facilities and grounds at Ohio Hi-Point.

The upgrade will allow new equipment to be used for a new solar training program that will soon be available to students at the school.

Jennifer Brubaker, business and industry coordinator, said a renewable energy program will eventually allow students to study a wide variety of careers in a field that is expected to grow for the next several years.

Many of the manufacturing jobs in the future will support renewable energy, both in building parts and maintaining equipment. To meet that demand, Brubaker said school officials began developing a solar training program to offer that expertise to Hi-Point students.

“We’re trying to make the programs so there are multiple job paths,” she said.

The program is still in its early stages, but Brubaker said initially the program will focus on solar training. Students will be able to learn how to troubleshoot systems that provide solar energy, and the program could expand to other forms of renewable energy as well. Students will learn to maintain electrical and mechanical components used in sustainable energy systems.

Brubaker said the classes could be available by 2012.

The idea, she said, is that once students complete the solar training program, they can continue with similar classes in college or move directly into the workforce in some cases.

Initially, the program will only be available at Hi-Point’s south campus in Urbana, she said.

  1. This is great news! I couldn't reccomend the use of renewable energy in the home any more. Me and my husband recently had a set of panels installed in our rural property and are already seeing the benefits. Although it's most definitely troublesome to think of the possibility of having to pay for a re-installation as technology progresses.

  2. Installing solar panels for home use can be a great way to minimize or even eliminate your electric bill. Solar panels have improved over the years and current versions of these panels for home use are more efficient and durable than ever.

  3. As the price of fuel of rockets, many of us are feeling the squeeze. Not only harmful to the atmosphere, reserves of oils and fossil fuels are quickly becoming depleted. After installing panels at home or for commercial use, users will see benefits immediately.
