A new solar training program sees College of the Desert link up with solar giants First Solar to support local training for green jobs in the large utility-scale solar projects that are expected to come to Riverside County.
First Solar, a large manufacturer of photovoltaic solar panels, is donating solar equipment, hands-on solar training and technical expertise COD’s Desert Region Renewable Energy Training Program at the Desert Energy Enterprise Center in Palm Springs.
Solar training has already got underway at the center with training for utility-scale solar power plant construction in anticipation of the many proposed solar projects in the Southern California desert.
The COD/First Solar training program is helping unemployed and underemployed newcomers to the industy train and become qualified in what will become a booming sector.
COD´s Larry McLaughlin said, “As the region’s utility-scale solar energy industry grows, generation companies and their contractors, as well as unions, will be searching for skilled workers who understand solar installation and maintenance requirements.”
Kim Oster from First Solar said that the collaboration is a great example of the firm's commitment on solar education and the empowering the local workforce.
With the potential to create 430 new jobs Oster said,"It will provide a much-needed boost to the local economy.”
College of the Desert’s Desert Energy Enterprise Center, 3301 Micro Place, is just south of I-10, north of Gene Autry Trail.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA, OPEN SOLAR TRAINING CENTER
A renewable energy jobs apprenticeship program - INCLUDING SOLAR TRAINING - should be up and running in St. Lucie County within the next month, officials said last week.
This new program will train workers for jobs in the renewable energy field aimed at improving the environment, such as increasing emergency efficiency and the installation of solar panels to a house.
Recently, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, who is running for U.S. Senate visited the site.
"The fact is, you are 10 steps ahead of any county in Florida, urban or rural," Congressman Meek said.
The center is located on U.S. 1, between Edwards and Midway roads, at the old Sam's Club, which is now the home of the St. Lucie County Logistics Center.
"It's coming together," County Commissioner Charles Grande said. "It's people in St. Lucie County who are putting it together."
The program is a joint effort between the county government and 8 trade unions. Union workers are renovating the section of the building that will be used for the center.
With St. Lucie County having a high unemployment rate, County Commissioner Doug Coward said it was vital for workers to retrain so they are able to tap into what will be an area of enormous growth in the coming years.
Mr. Coward said the county is also working to create a revolving loan fund that will allow home and business owners to obtain long-term, low interest loans to make solar energy improvements.
Although Florida has long been considered a prime area for solar power, the cost has been prohibitive for many businesses and residences, Mr. Coward said.
Affordable loans will boost solar training projects that will provide jobs and apprenticeships to workers trained at the Logistics Center, Mr. Coward said.
With the solar training program combining with low interest loans, the organisers are hoping to double the number of solar energy installations in the state in just one county, he said.
There's also the hope that the county will attract related industry, such as a manufacturer of solar panels, Mr. Coward said.
Congressman Meek said he's impressed with the solar training program and its potential.
"The bottom line is we have to put folks back to work," he said. And this solar training program could be the first step.

Why Solar Training Can Be Your Key To A Brighter Future
People who undertake solar training now could be feeling the positive effects of their actions for the rest of their life.
With the recession still biting, spiralling fuel bills and peoples need to do something positive for the environment, turning to solar energy is becoming more and more popular and this has opened up an entire new job market. And with some training, its a job market there for the taking.
Solar training schools can last from a week to a year or two, depending on the type of certificate or degree offered at the end of the course.
When you have decided which sector of the solar industry you would like to enter then it is not too hard to find the correct solar training program.
And although traditional industries are still reeling from the recession all over the world, the solar industry has a shortage of skilled people as it starts to boom.
With the correct qualifications, a career in the solar energy industry would reward you with both job satisfaction and a stack of money too.
With the infant solar industry only just starting to gain the attention of the masses, there are many green jobs available with very few people to fill them. But with the correct solar training qualifications, you will more than likely have a job for life. Let´s face it, as long as the sun keeps shining, then you will be in work.
There are many solar training programs listed on this blog in all areas of the world. And I keep it updated when a new course is offered. So always pop back to have a look to see if there is one being run in your area.

Solar Training In UK To Expand As Demand Grows
With the UK Government launching the Clean Energy Cashback Scheme, the demand for solar energy and therefore solar training is set to soar.
This new scheme will enable owners of solar PV systems to be paid a guaranteed rate for the energy they generate like in Germany.
Now Sharp, one of the UK´s largest manufacturers of PV solar panels, is predicting a tenfold rise in demand for solar panels over the next two years as a result of the government’s unveiling of the Feed-In Tariff or Clean Energy Cash Back scheme.
This program provides loans that will enable thousands of homeowners to buy solar energy panels and other green products such as insulation and mini wind turbines. There is a shortage of solar installers in the UK and so solar training is going to be in much demand.
According to Sharp, the program will boost the number of homes with solar panels from the currently installed 28,000 to around 250,000 by the end of 2011. They are confident that by 2014 there will be about 400,000 homes with solar panels and they believe it will create 30,000 jobs over that period. Figures from the Department of Energy and Climate Change show that more than 800,000 homes could have solar panels over the next 25 years.
The potential for making a good living in this field are enormous and anyone thinking of undergoing solar training should quickly start to enrol on some courses.
From April 1 2010, homeowners will be able to borrow from electricity providers at a preferential rate. Soon, it will take less than 10 years to repay the loan and it is estimated that a homeowner could bank £36,000 profit on the system over 25 years.
The mass rollout of Solar PV in the UK will mean a huge demand for trained and approved installers across the UK. Solar training courses are going to be in huge demand.
Solar Training to be an installer now involves learning the knowledge and practical skills required for the safe and installation of renewable energy for the home or workplace.
One such company offering classes is AbleSkills who have built dedicated renewable energy training workshops in conjunction with energy assessment courses to supply an increasingly vital service.
Able Skills - in conjunction with NICEIC, CITB and City & Guilds – are helping to lead the way with the opening of a dedicated Energy Saving Training Centre to provide the necessary approved training, the City & Guilds 2372 Level 3 Certificate in Installing and Testing Photovoltaic (PV) Systems.
So if you are thinking about a career in solar energy and want to do a solar training course, I would suggest you get your skates on and enroll quickly.

Lanier Technical College in Georgia Offer Solar Training
Lanier Technical College in Georgia, USA will soon hold its second class of students for solar training.
Solar training instructor Bill Silva said the class is the only entry-level PV solar training course in Georgia offering certification from the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners.
“Lanier Tech really wanted to offer that here,” Bill said. “We have corporate sponsors who are leaders in the industry who provided the brand-new, state-of-the-art equipment. It’s pretty nice.”
Silva, who also serves as president of United Renewable Energy, was asked by the college to teach the course as the first of many steps toward offering a full degree in renewable energy.
Bills company delivers solar energy systems to businesses and homes, focusing on solar photovoltaic systems. And the business also helped found the college’s solar PV lab.
“We wanted to donate something to the program as well as to involve the industry,” Silva said. “We engaged these companies and we were able to build up a base of corporate sponsors.
“The reason I did that is because I knew we could build a state-of-the-art solar PV lab, but we needed to do it with the budget we had.”
And it´s not just United Renewable Energy donating equipment. Suniva, SMA, Solectria and Direct Power and Water also contributed equipment for use in the solar training program, which began this year.
Russell Vandiver, Lanier Tech’s acting president, expressed gratitude for the program’s “many high-caliber corporate sponsors.”
“Their generosity allows us to provide a high caliber training lab to students interested in learning to install solar PV power sources,” he said in a statement.
Silva said students come from various backgrounds, including some who are already in the construction trade or renewable energy field.
About half the class time focuses on lectures and learning background technology and design. The other half is spent in the lab, where students get hands-on experience using the equipment.
Silva said he has a vested interest in the class, especially as the solar energy industry continues to grow in Georgia.
“It’s really important to me that we have qualified installers out there delivering quality products,” he said. “I want to make sure that we have quality solar training for them that provides hands-on training and in-depth knowledge.”

Solar Training In Richmond, California
Solar training is much in demand as solar energy takes off as a viable and affordable renewable energy resource. Jobs in the solar sector are sprouting everywhere.
But there isn´t an abundance of such training courses. Fortunately, if you live in Richmond, California, you can sign up for a solar training program offered by groSolar and One Block Off the Grid (1BOG).
Through a job training partnership called Solar Richmond, people wanting to learn the solar installation trade can learn from solar expert installers in n intensive 14-week program, which includes 7 weeks of pre-apprenticeship construction and 3 weeks of energy efficiency training.
After attending construction, energy efficiency and solar training programs, participants have the added benefit of being placed in a paid, temporary workforce immediately following completion of the program to gain hands on knowledge of the work environment and to give you much needed experience..
The solar training graduates get hands-on experience that will set them apart from other job candidates in the future, and the trainers receive inexpensive labor. Both sides come out winners!
The participant’s wages are shared between groSolar, 1BOG and the purchaser of the solar installation.
Aside from the low cost installation work, the program is already credited in helping boost and develop a highly skilled and much sought after green job workforce in the solar industry.
With 2010 poised to be a big year for solar power, solar training programs like Solar Richmond are expected to spread across the U.S. Many graduates from these courses go on to have successful careers in the sector.
